Custom Furniture

The Mountain Woodworker specializes in making Shaker and Mission style furniture. We strive to maintain the simplicity, beauty, and craftsmanship of these styles. Our signature pieces often use contrasting light and dark woods such as maple and cherry, or birch and walnut. Generally the lighter woods are used for the structural parts of the furniture such as legs, rails and frames. The darker woods may be used for stiles, panels, and accent parts.

It is important to understand that almost all furniture consists of both primary and secondary woods. Click here to learn about the purpose of primary and secondary woods and The Mountain Woodworker's view on their use.

Shaker style cedar chest
Revisit the days when cedar chests were hand made with natural lumber from the aromatic red cedar tree. With a rich history that dates back hundreds of years ago these chests are one of the oldest forms of furniture. Used primarily for blanket & quilt storage to keep the moths away, these chests were also served as benches, writing tables with paper, ink and pens storage and in China, to store medicines and medical apparatus.

Today many so-called cedar chests do not even contain cedar or only a veneer of the wood inside the chest. At the Mountain Woodworker, our cedar chests are made only with aromatic red cedar. No other woods are use. The outside of our chests are sealed with a quality finish while the inside is sanded smooth and left bare so that this wonderfully scented wood will keep clothes, blankets and other garments fresh and protected from moths and other fabric destroying insects.

The Mountain Woodworker cedar chests are a prized inclusion many homes. They can be ordered in a variety of sizes, with sub-divided interiors, or with sliding or lift out trays. Click here for a chart of available sizes.

Similar to the cedar chest is the "cassone." Cassones do not use cedar but other woods which do not have the aromatic fragrance or protection that cedar provides. If you prefer a cassone, contact the Mountain Woodworker for pricing. Our cassones come in the same sizes and with the same options as our cedar chests.
